0.04 – Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a way of being, of seeing, of fully experiencing life in here and now.

Mindful painting is about exploring mark making, intuition and being aware of the moment we are in.

In mindful drawing or painting we focus our mind entirely on the creative process.


The simple act of making marks on a page can help our busy, worried, stressed, overacting minds pause for a while and relax.


I started practicing mindful drawing about a year ago.

I have always enjoyed sketching, drawing, coloring, painting.

Creativity has been part of my life ever since I can remember myself. It was a practice as important to me as the air that I breathe.

I trained as a textile designer and worked for more than 15 years as a design consultant for many companies, designing tableware, furnishing fabrics, carpets, gift items.

I travelled around the world to supervise samples and the manufacturing process.

I enjoyed my work but somehow, because of all the do’s and dont’s, all the restrictions and client’s pressure, I lost the pure joy of creating; the excitement and bliss I felt as a child and young creative, when I was drawing without any purpose, other than the act of drawing and painting itself.

So, at that point, I decided to spend about 15 to 30 minutes everyday, drawing and painting without any reason, without thinking, without judging, without worrying about the end result.


This daily practice, my thirty minute mindful painting, is an activity that I cherish most, it is the time of the day that I am fully absorbed and in the flow.


My mind calms, I am not thinking about the past, or worrying about the future.

I am not forcing anything to happen, I do not have to work anything out.

I loose sense of time, of space, I am simply being present fully engaged into drawing, simply being creative.


There is no sense of effort only enjoyment.


This is what mindful drawing is about: of being totally immersed in an activity, making creative choices intuitively, without overthinking.

It is about being fully present, observing how water is absorbed by paper, how pigments mix together to reveal a new color, how the brush moves across the page following its own path.

When our thinking minds are quieted, when we are totally absorbed in the process of mark making, something wonderful begins to happen: we become more aware of the world around, we become in tune with life itself.
